BPW Sydney would like to invite you to our 16th March Dinner, featuring:

Wearing your culture to work
The Australian businesswoman in a hijab

Speakers: Dr Angeline Low and Dr Christina Ho

No-one makes a fuss when the Queen sports one from Hermès! But Muslim women and the kind of traditional headscarf many of them wear over their hair, neck and shoulders have been subject to public scrutiny in recent years.

And despite decades of debate in Australia about race and belonging, for Muslim women the conversation rarely progresses beyond narrow, provocative comments about their personal choices and Islamic religious, or sharia, law.

Not at BPW Sydney. Members and their guests are invited to consider the Australian businesswoman in a hijab at our next meeting on Tuesday 16 March, in line with International Women's Day earlier in the month.

Hear from two leading academics on the issue

Dr Angeline Low and Dr Christina Ho from the University of Technology, Sydney (UTS) will provide an informed introduction to this hot topic and lead a lively discussion afterwards.

Dr Low is the Chancellor's Post Doctoral Research Fellow in the School of Finance and Economics at UTS. Her main research interests are entrepreneurship and its intersections with leadership, gender and ethnicity, with a focus on Muslim women entrepreneurs as change leaders in Australia, Canada and Uzbekistan.

Dr Ho is Senior Lecturer in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at UTS. She researches migration, gender and cultural diversity, and has a particular interest in Muslim women’s experiences and the Chinese diaspora. She is co-editor of Beyond the Hijab Debates: New Conversations on Gender, Race and Religion.

Listen to the Muslim woman’s point of view

We will also hear from a group of Muslim women entrepreneurs about their concerns and experiences in business in Australia.

These women relied largely on their own human capital, family resources and social networks to launch diverse business ventures. Their voices are helping all Australians to rethink gender and entrepreneurship, and to value entrepreneurial talent in whatever package it comes.

Whether you wear a hijab, have colleagues and friends who do, or just want to better understand our Muslim community in the Australian economy, this meeting should deepen your appreciation for the implications and rewards of doing business with Muslim women.

Do YOU know what your kids or employees are looking at on their computer?

This Dialogue focuses on the issue of internet/media censorship and how we could protect our children and staff members from being confronted with harmful content.  To what extent can (and should) we control what they can browse through, and to what degree should the government play a role in this?
Sydney Club's Dialogue results are forwarded to BPW's national chapter and assist with BPW's opinion forming process and BPW's input during the United Nations sessions each year.
